You’re starting to feel very calm and sleepy………..
Oh great! Now he thinks he’s trying out for the gymnist team. Whatever, at least he’s quiet.
What are you doing to stay cool?? Remember to drink plenty of fluid because both heat and dehydration can make the numbers higher. Drink Up! | Lizzy’s Diabetes Lounge. If you use insulin heat can make it enter your system faster, so be aware of this as well. Also remember that come Winter you’ll probably look back at this fondly.

Knowledge is Power

When I was diagnosed, close to 11 years ago, I was told “you are diabetic”, given a prescription for some medication, and told to wait for a nurse to come in and give me an insulin shot. When I picked up the prescription I was given a 10-page booklet telling me “All About How to Mange Diabetes”, and sent on my way. That was the extent of my “education”.
During the recent heat wave that ran through Virginia, I noticed that my BG would tank easier. I am relatively newly diagnosed and never heard back from the diabetes education sessions the doctor recommended. At the same time I was diagnosed with a hypothyroid (under active thyroid). My dad is diabetic as well but his is not well controlled by his own admission, he has not figured out how to control it yet. I have figured out on my own that my body is happiest between 80 and 115 for a BG reading. Can you explain why the heat seemed to make my BG drop to where I needed sugar to bring me up to feeling like a human being? I have also noticed that if I go past 3 hours between eating my body is not happy either, and 2 hours is optimal. I drink water and only 24 ounces of Diet Dew maximum per day. I always carry snacks and over pack my lunch for work with “on the go foods”. I work at a convenience store so I am not always able to eat when I need to, or I will push myself to get a certain task accomplished before I take a break and eat. My coworkers are very aware of my illness and try to help me remember to eat. I did not like the way I felt the past week, I usually have my sugar in my good range, but I felt like I could not control it. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I sometimes feel like I am flying blind.

Hi Steffy,
My numbers are lower during hot weather too. I live in the D.C. metro area and it has been HOT!!!! For some people heat causes their body to work harder (staying cool) and that takes more energy (food).
People who limit carbs do find that they have to eat more often or they might go low. I try to eat at least a snack every three hours too. You have to find the balance that’s right for you, eat too many carbs = higher numbers, don’t eat often enough = low numbers, or higher numbers with a liver dump. You don’t have to eat much, I keep a pack of lifesavers and eat one or two which is enough to keep my liver happy and my numbers stable.

These lil’ guys are so cute… happy Fourth, Lizzy! Take the day off and celebrate!
Hi JD.
I’m hoping that we don’t have any more bad storms tonight because I can see the fireworks on the National Mall from the balcony of my apartment. I look forward to my “private show” every year.

Thanks Lizzy. Cute pictures.
Hi James,
I’m sure it’s really hot where you live too, be careful!
Lizzy
Hi Lizzy,
I don’t think it’s as hot here in Albuquerque NM like it is where you are.
I know, you have a “dry” heat, we have an old wet dishcloth soggy humid heat!
Lizzy
It can get humid here to
