Knowledge is Power

When I was diagnosed, close to 11 years ago, I was told “you are diabetic”, given a prescription for some medication, and told to wait for a nurse to come in and give me an insulin shot. When I picked up the prescription I was given a 10-page booklet telling me “All About How to Mange Diabetes”, and sent on my way. That was the extent of my “education”. (More ...)

Hi Lizzie,
I have seen 2 doctors through the clinic. Was supposed to see her, the latest one, 1 month ago..found out she’s gone and I’m on a wait list. What a pain. I take metformin, 2000 mg daily and lantus. I have decreased my insulin to 15 units, gradually tapering it down as my numbers keep going down. Finally talked to a nurse today. She thinks I’m doing ok but wants me to add carbs. I eat fruits and veggies but stay away from grains. They spike my sugar. She said thats not healthy and I NEED the carbs. I stay away from potatoes, breads, cereals. I’m fine with the way I eat. I have not gained weight and she told me this is why. The thought of eating these carbs scares me! Will I really get sick if I don’t eat them?? staying away from the grains and gluten seems a good thing for me. Would love your input. I am never going to eat cereals or breads..the thought scares me.
Tell the nurse to give you concrete proof of just what not eating grains will do to wreck your health. She won’t be able to come up with any because there isn’t any. While I wouldn’t be afraid of them, you also don’t have to have them.
Get your doctor to run tests of if you’re deficient in any nutrients and if so find a way to augment those in your diet.
One thing that makes me the most angry is that these people quote words and ideas from 20 or more years ago that had no basis in fact even then. They usually have no idea of the details, so if asked can’t really say why, just “You need it to be healthy”. There are many people in the world that live quite healthy but never touch a grain.
Having said that, I have to admit that I wouldn’t be able to completely give them up. I don’t have that much will power.

Lizzy thanks for that video…Much easier to understand than anything i have heard yet…………By the way what is predawn syndrom and why do some get it and not others? Bev
Hi Beverly,
Glad you liked the video. It’s Dawn syndrome, many people have problems with it, here’s the link about it: http://lizzysdlounge.com/2012/03/14/d-p-or-why-are-my-morning-numbers-so-high/.

Thank You…..i now understand DP…thanks~~ the info was great….B
It is indeed very easy to understand and should help a lot of people! Thank You!
But as a biochemically oriented kind of guy, I am quite intrigued about the concept that the tramsport mechanism can be clogged by fat deposits. On the molecular level, that really sounds a bit off-the-wall. Not denying it at all! Just a bit… skeptical, you might say.
Need to investigate and find out more about the known reasons for resistance. (Same as most investigators are doing! LOL! LOL! And LOL MORE!)
Hi Rob,
It makes sense to me, but then I’ve done a lot of research on the subject. A lot of it has to do with the way the liver functions and processes and creates fat deposits. Start there.
Lizzy
I will indeed start there! Just tough for me to fathom clogging a molecular transporter. But never can tell!
Thanks a lot!
Rob
Thanks for posting this video on your blog. You are right about it being easy to understand.
Glad you thought so James.

Very easy to understand for us visual learners
Is it true that type 2 is ALWAYS progressive?
Thanks!
Hi Susan,
It’s true that some people learn faster visually. I’m thinking especially younger people since so much these days is visual. I’m old, so I don’t count LOL.
Life is progressive. The older you get the more things that can happen to your body. This is a fact, none of us are immortal, although some food-style people think their diets cure everything so I guess immortality is their benefit.
If you do the best you can to maintain your health you’ll only be prone to the things that all humans are prone to. And while we’re on the subject, don’t ask me about age and gravity. Eck!
