How I Ate a Whole Triple-Chocolate Brownie Without Spiking

Hi,

My name is Lizzy and I’m a chocoholic.

Most of the time I’m content with a little dark chocolate every day, but every now and then I have to shop at Whole Foods.

The minute I walk into the store a little voice starts calling me:

Lizzy, come to the bakery.  Lizzy, I’m waiting for you, you know you want me.  Lizzy, here I am in all my glory your triple chocolate fudge brownie.  All just for you!!!!

Okay, so I’m no saint.   But I decided I’m a lot smarter than those diabetes gremlins and I could come up with a way to out-smart them without my numbers spiking.

And I did!

I get the brownie home and cut it up into small little bite-sized pieces.  Then I proceed to eat one piece every hour or so.  So instead of one big sweet chocolate fix followed by a hoard of quilt I get to enjoy about 10 small sweet chocolate fixes and no guilt at all. 

Those brownies are heavenly!

We won’t go into the calories however.

    That’s an awesome little tip! My first diabetic birthday is coming up(diagnosed two months ago) and while i honestly don’t think i want cake i was feeling nervous about how to handle it if i did. On a seperate note, why does it seem that every diabetes forum i go to never has a post thats from within the past few months? Where is everone, lol!

      I don’t read many forums, but the ADA has posts from today and 4 years ago, so check that one out.

        thanks. I’m not the biggest fan of the ADA. They think its acceptable for my post-prandial to go as high as 179 when anything over 140 starts nerve damage. I don’t know how they can keep there pp’s so high!!!!

        I look almost everyday for posts and blogs and will continue to keep your website part of my daily diabetic life Your attitude is positive and your advice is honest and realistic. you rock!

          Thanks for the compliments. The statement that anything over 140 causes nerve damage is not correct however. Sustained numbers for long periods of time can cause damage, but short term numbers do not. I happen to know the person’s blog who started and perpetrates this myth, and she’s wrong. My friend Morris did a complete investigation of her links and found most of her statements were incorrect. One of the links clearly stated that any damage from higher numbers reversed when the BG normalized (we’re talking short time here not long periods). The human body is a marvelous thing, give it more credit. There’s no reason for people to be unduly paranoid or anxious, dealing with diabetes is hard enough without being in a constant state of anxiety.

            hi. thanks for the kind words. I am having a first endo visit in a few weeks and I am hopefull that you are right. My diabetes coach hates anything over 120-I think he is a bit rigid. I have been a little paranoid, lol!! Overall I am doing well and am very proud of the progress I am making. I am experiencing Dawn Phenomenon a bit and so that still bothers me(a.m. BS is usually 104-112 and after dinner can be 97!) Plus I am anemic with small red blood cells and I never sleep more than 3hours in a row. I finally need all that evaluated and interpreted. Hoping things are well with you and all who come across this great website! Looking forward to being a regular :)

    I have been watching my BG levels for the last few years. Bought my own meter and strips. Highest I have been was 227, one hour after eating. Did finally had a HgA1C done and it was 5.9. I was kinda surprised that the doctor wasn’t alarmed or even suggested I should be careful. I find that when I am busy walking around a lot my sugars are usually fine. Am dealing with a bit of anger as I am tall and slim and am not a junk food or high sugar eater. Grrrrr!!!

      Hi Holly,

      I see your statements were answered on a subsequent comment on pre-diabetes…a rant. Your doctor is old school since now 5.9 is considered “pre” diabetic. Many slim people (at least when they start out) have diabetes, and many grossly overweight people do not and never will. Don’t believe all of the current
      “hype” about obesity causing diabetes because it’s just not true!

      Exercise does use up glucose effectively, so is a good control method.

    Great blog. Thanks! Just diagnosed a month ago and this is the best info I’ve found.
    Having a hard time getting it all worked out. There is a lot of conflicting info around and I seem to pick the worst and get lots of bg spikes. I am highly sensitive to carbs and have found that when I eat fewer I have better bg readings. It amazes me. I always think the bg levels are going to be very high after hi fat meals low carb meals, but just the opposite happens.

      Hi Tanya,

      Yes carbs are what drive the numbers higher. Fat really has little effect on type-2 numbers. You have to be careful though with high fat/high carb because the fat can cause the numbers to spike much later from the carbs. It’s called the “pizza effect” but is true for any high fat/high carb meal. With low carb the fat actually helps any spike that may occur by prolonging it and usually the numbers stay lower overall.

      When we were kids my brother always wolfed down treats in 2 seconds, I always savored them for as long as possible. Guess I’m still like that LOL.
